Local photographer’s work honored in Jasper County contest

Warren Terpstra’s photo of a sunrise over the pond at Jacob Krumm Nature Preserve, located one-fourth of a mile north of the Lynnville exit off I-80, was chosen as one of eight winners in the Jasper County Conservation photo contest.

Warren Terpstra of Sully is finding his photography in print once again. His keen eye behind the camera has garnered several photography awards in the past. The latest recognition and honor comes from the Jasper County Conservation photo contest.

In early November, Jasper County Conservation launched a natural resource/conservation photo contest on Facebook. Rules of the contest indicated anyone who entered must be an amateur photographer. All submitted photos must have depicted a seasonal aspect of Jasper County’s natural resources/conservation and be taken within the county.

Of the 61 entries submitted, Terpstra’s “Krumm Pond Sunrise” was one in the top eight once all votes were cast on Dec. 1. Those eight winning photos are now featured on blank greeting cards that are available for purchase through the Jasper County Conservation office. Each package contains 16 cards featuring the eight winning images from the photo contest. They are available for purchase for $15 each and are sold as a fundraiser.

Other winners in Jasper County Conservation’s 2019 Facebook photo contest are “Canoe on Pond at Sunset” by Steve Woody, “Rock Creek Sunset” by Peggy Hiemstra, “Maytag Park” by Peggy Hiemstra, “South Skunk Clouds” by Norm Van Klompenburg, “Rock Creek Campground” by Emily Van Arkel, “The Cove at Rock Creek” by Peggy Hiemstra, and “Lightning Strike Over Pond” by Steve Woody. Honorable mention went to Kaylin Hauber with her “Fall Flames.” All winning photographers received a package of the cards with their names printed on the back.

In their social media post, Jasper County Conservation said, “We had no idea how much our followers liked views of sky and water, but these will make beautiful cards!”

Terpstra revived his photography hobby after laying it aside for 35 years. His photos have graced the pages of the Hometown Press in the past, and a series of nature shots Terpstra shot during 2019 can be found on the New Year’s greeting on pages 10-11 of this issue.
