The Lynnville-Sully Community School District is boasting school enrollment numbers that haven’t been seen in nearly a decade. This year’s K-12 enrollment numbers top the 500 mark, a tally L-S Superintendent Shane Ehresman reports hasn’t been seen since 2008 when 504 students were enrolled at Lynnville-Sully.
“The enrollment increase is good news for Lynnville-Sully because the Iowa school finance formula is based on the number of students in a district. As we gain more students, Lynnville-Sully generates more revenue to serve those students. A majority of school districts in Iowa suffer from declining enrollment, negatively impacting their budget,” said Ehresman.
Lynnville-Sully has 510 students enrolled in kindergarten through 12th grade for the 2017-18 school year. A large kindergarten class of 47 students attributes to the rise of 20-plus students compared to last year, as well as a growing number of open-enrolled students. The future looks bright for L-S as this year’s four-year-old preschool classes also tout record numbers at 51 students enrolled. Lynnville-Sully’s largest class, seventh grade, has 49 students followed closely by the kindergarten class (47) and 11th-grade class (46).
Lynnville-Sully continues to draw students from outside the school district. Ehresman notes open enrollment numbers are on the rise, and in 2017-18, Lynnville-Sully will welcome 85 students from surrounding school districts, an increase of 13 compared to last year. Only 41 students residing in the L-S School District are open enrolling out. Oct. 2 is the official school enrollment certification date – the number of students enrolled at L-S on that day will determine state funding the school district will receive next school year. Each student enrolled brings in $6,664 of state aid.
