Bailey Vos is State Champion – again! The junior led the PC girls track and field team to school history as they won the Class 2A team title at the State Track and Field Championships May 22-24.

 

Track and Field

Bailey Vos, daughter of Curt and Candice Vos of Sully, completed a season full of victories and accolades on the highest stage – the Class 2A State Track and Field Championships held at Drake Stadium in Des Moines May 22-24. And she did it in remarkable fashion, winning the 400m dash and anchoring the sprint medley and 4x400 relays to champion status. The sprint medley team crossed the finish line in 1:46.68 and the 4x400 time of 3:55.54 set a new school record. Vos earned silver in the 200m dash in 25.04. The Eagles secured the overall team championship, a first for a Pella Christian girls sports team in school history.

PC senior Landon Fransman, grandson of Wes Van Wyk, capped off his phenomenal track and field event at State in the high jump. He cleared 6’’3” for seventh place.

 

Golf

See next week’s issue to see how the PC boys golf team fared at the Class 2A State Golf Tournament held in Waterloo May 27-28. Varsity golfers with local connections include Eliot Menninga, grandson of Daryl and Linda Menninga; Landon Fransman, grandson of Wes Van Wyk; and Carter Brand, son of Eric and Faye Brand and grandson of Dale and Tana Brand and Leon and Margaret Vander Weerdt.

Soccer

The PC girls soccer season ended on Wednesday, May 21, with a loss to Albia, 2-1, in the Class 1A Region 7 quarterfinals. They finished with an 8-7 overall record. Players with local connections include Julianne Van Gorp, granddaughter of Marv and Lynda Slings; Cambria Van Dyke, granddaughter of Marv and Pam Van Dyke; Chloe Vos, daughter of Curt and Candice Vos; and Maggie Vos, granddaughter of Gary and Becky Vos.

The boys hosted the second round of Class 1A Substate 7 against West Branch on Tuesday, May 27. Drew Van Wyngarden, grandson of Craig and Fos Van Wyngarden, is on the team.

 

Tennis

The PC girls tennis team swept Albia, 5-0, in the semifinals of the Class 1A Team Regional Tournament on Tuesday, May 20. Later in the day, a 5-0 loss to Pella in the Regional Championship match ended the season. The team finished with an 11-2 overall record.

Against Albia, Renae Van Wyk, senior daughter of Lauren and Julie Van Wyk, gave PC their first win with a 6-1, 6-0 decision.

Additional players with local connections include senior Allison Pleima, daughter of Stuart and Sheila Pleima, and senior Erika Van Maanen, daughter of Kevin and Melanie Van Maanen.

 

Baseball

The Eagles had a rough season opener against Class 1A’s fourth-ranked Sigourney Savages on Wednesday, May 21. The Eagles were shut out, 19-0, in four innings. Garrett Wielard, grandson of Vernon and Bonnie Vander Weerdt, was one of two Eagles to reach base with a walk.

On Friday, May 23, the Eagles hosted Carlisle and dropped the 10-0 game in five innings. The Eagles are 0-2 to start the season. They travelled to Dallas Center-Grimes on Wednesday for a doubleheader. They play Clarke Community at home on Thursday, May 29, and make the short trip to Newton on Friday, May 30.
