The Lynnville-Sully girls basketball team is hoping their season opener is a sign of good things to come. Hosting Iowa Valley last Friday, Nov. 17, the girls kept the lead the whole way through with a final score of 64-34 against the SICL Conference foe.
L-S began to pull away almost from the start, outscoring Iowa Valley 11-4 and 21-15 in the first two quarters to go up 32-19 at the half. Iowa Valley matched L-S with 11 points in the third quarter, but the Hawks put them away in the fourth, scoring 21 points and holding Iowa Valley to four.
“It was a good first game,” said head basketball coach Jerry Hulsing. “The girls played very hard, and even if they were a little tired, they kept battling. I thought we rebounded the ball well, which leads to us being able to get out and run the floor for some easy baskets. Our offense was okay in the half court, but I still think we could move the ball just a little sharper.” Junior Carson Fisk had a strong start to the year, leading L-S in scoring with a total of 22 points. She also contributed with nine rebounds and four assists. Senior Mariah Vos also had an impressive game, earning a double-double with 16 points, 14 rebounds, and one assist. Senior Camryn Russell was the third-highest scorer with eight points. Senior Jataya Meyer had seven points and nine rebounds. Altogether, the team had 51 rebounds and 12 assists.
As a team, L-S made 40 percent of its shots (27 of 66), including three of 14 three-pointers. They’ll be looking to improve at the free-throw line after shooting 50 percent (seven of 14).
“Friday’s game was a fun one to get out and get the season started,” Fisk said. “Our defense was solid, and our offense found multiple ways to score. We definitely worked as a team and altogether fought the hard and long game of basketball.”
Russell expressed similar feelings about the season opener.
“For it being the first game of the season, we came out and played really well and came out with a win,” she said. “During the game, we were able to show our individual strengths and that allowed us to play as a team.”
The girls’ next game is Tuesday, when they will travel to Baxter. Their next home game will be Tuesday, Nov. 28, versus Montezuma.
