DePenning, Corbett recognized for umpiring accomplishments

Two baseball umpires from Sully were recognized at the Iowa High Baseball Coaches Association (IHSBCA) annual banquet on Saturday, Jan. 23, at the Sheraton Hotel in Des Moines.

Nick DePenning was awarded the "Dave Harty Umpire Newcomer of the Year Award." It is presented to a young umpire who shows promise and dedication to the umpire profession. DePenning has risen through the ranks in his brief three-year career thus far, working at the state tournament last season. DePenning is an elementary reading and P.E. teacher at Lynnville-Sully.

Jeff Corbett received an award for 15 years of service in umpiring. He was also one of three finalists, selected from numerous nominees, for the Southeast District Umpire of the Year Award. The award was given to Mike Botts of Davenport. The nominees are made from the district coaches, and then the entire membership votes for the recipient. Corbett is a middle school math teacher at Lynnville-Sully and has been a finalist for this award two other times.

Both baseball coaches and umpires alike belong to the IHSBCA organization in support of high school baseball. The coaches and umpires are awarded many honors at the annual banquet in recognition of their contribution to the sport.
