Back-to-back state golf appearances for Smock

The junior looks to defend her state championship title

Remaining undefeated through-out the entire regular and state-qualifying events, junior Greenlee Smock advanced to the state golf meet to defend her class 1A state title after winning the regional finals on her home turf at Diamond Trail Golf Course on Wednesday, May 18.

On hole one and two, Smock earned a par score and got a birdie on hole three while getting par on hole four and another birdie on hole five. She scored par on hole six and a bogey on hole seven. On holes eight and nine, she made par for a score of 35 on her first nine holes, one swing under par.

In the second round, Smock got par on hole 10, and double bogeyed on hole 11. She managed to swing a birdie on hole 12, and pars on holes 13 and 14. On hole 15, she got a birdie. Finishing out the last few holes, she had par on holes 16 and 17, and a bogey on hole 18 for a total score of 74, only two over par for the course.

Greenlee Smock is headed back to the Class 1A state golf tournament to defend her title.

She outshot her SICL rival Madelynn Hornback of Sigourney, who carded a 78, for her second consecutive state qualification.

“I’m obviously so proud of Greenlee, and extremely happy for her. I know coming off state champion honors, the pressure can start to amount to do that again. I saw Greenlee play a calm and confident round of golf. She hit a lot of really good shots and was able to capitalize off her misses. She’ll spend her next three days at the state track meet, and then we’ll get back to work on Monday to prepare,” said coach Jeff Knouse.

Smock will golf at American Legion Golf Course in Marshalltown on Thursday and Friday, May 26-27.
