Vernon W. Van Wyk, 75

Funeral services for Vernon W. Van Wyk, 75, of Grinnell and formerly of Sully, were held Jan. 7, 2014, at Sully First Reformed Church. Interment was in Sully Cemetery. He passed away on Friday, Jan. 3, at Grinnell Health Care Center. Memorials have been designated for the Sully First Reformed Church Legacy Project.

Vernon Wayne Van Wyk was born Nov. 3, 1938, near Lynnville to William G. and Johanna De Jong Van Wyk. Vernon received his early education at country schools near his home. On June 9, 1959, he was united in marriage with Carolyn Vos at the Lynnville Friends Church. They were blessed with three children: Cindy, Kevin, and Rustin.

Vernon farmed the family farm along with various other jobs. Later, he became a machine operator at Precision Pulley in Pella. He and Carolyn were members of Sully First Reformed Church of which he was a lifelong member. He served as an elder and enjoyed teaching junior high Sunday School, which he did over 40 years.

Vernon enjoyed life which included playing softball, woodworking, fishing, and following his kids' and grandkids' activities.

Those left to cherish his memory are: his wife, Carolyn of Grinnell; his three children: Cindy (Wes) Laverman, Kevin (Julie) Van Wyk, and Rustin (Sharla) Van Wyk, all of Sully; his grandchildren: Dawnelle Laverman, Ryan (Jana) Laverman, Levi Laverman, Joshua Van Wyk, Cale Van Wyk, Ross Van Wyk, and Shaleah Van Wyk; his two brothers: Ralph J. (Ruby) Van Wyk and, Wilmer (Dorothy) Van Wyk; and sister-in-law, Esther Van Wyk.

Vernon was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Guysbert and Forrest Van Wyk; his sisters, Anna Mae Dunsbergen and Gertrude Van Wyk; and his grandson, Jeremy Laverman.
