Vernon Huyser, 90

Vernon Huyser, 90, of Pella and formerly of Lynnville passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2015, at Grinnell Health Care Center where he had been a resident for 10 days. Funeral services were held Oct. 17 at Sully First Reformed Church.

Vernon Gerrit Huyser was the son of Gerrit and Anna Marie (De Jong) Huyser, born May 4, 1925, south of Sully. He attended a country school, known as Battle Ridge, and also grade school in Sully. As a young lad, Vernon began working at the Sully Cooperative Exchange in Sully while living at home with his father, Gerrit Huyser, and step-mother, Helen (De Penning) Huyser. Vernon met Lucille Van Genderen on the town square in Sully, and they were united in marriage on Nov. 7, 1946, at the home of her parents, Leonard and Jennie (Brand) Van Genderen. Vernon and Lucille moved to a farm owned by Francis and Gertrude Huyser south of Lynnville in 1950, where they shared their lives together for the next 65 years. They raised three sons there and were inseparable. He enjoyed collecting antique tractors, and they enjoyed going on tractor rides. Vernon was part of the first WHO tractor ride and rode for the next 17 years. He was a member of the Dutch Masters Auto Club and a charter member of the Oliver Club. He attended many, many farm sales, and they faithfully attended their grandchildren’s activities and sports events. Traveling was a high priority as they loved to go away. Sept. 15, 2012, Lucille passed away at the age of 84. Life for Vernon was never quite the same, and he eventually became a resident at care facilities in Pella.

Vernon is survived by his three sons: Randy (Nancy) Huyser of Sully, Doyle (Linda) Huyser of Lynnville, and Doug (Sheri) Huyser of Sully; eight grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. Of his original family, Vernon leaves three brothers: Howard Dean Huyser of Pella, Myron (Nancy) Huyser of Badger, Gerrit “Gar” (Linda) Huyser of Auxvasse, MO; his half-sister, Lynda (Larry) Renaud of Sully; his sister-in-law, Ila Mae Huyser of Grinnell; and two sisters-in-law: Joyce (Dick) Ver Ploeg, Jr. of Sully and Sylvia Van Genderen of Newton.

Vernon was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; his step-mother; the following brothers and sister: Edward William, Wilma Adelee, Kenneth Charles. and Edward John Huyser; his parents-in-law; and a brother-in-law, Claris Van Genderen.

Vernon remained a faithful member of Sully First Reformed Church.
