Janet Sue Eichhorn, daughter of Randell and Ruth (Butler) O’Halloran, was born Feb. 2, 1941, in Grinnell. She graduated from Hartwick High School with the Class of 1959 where she was an excellent athlete and excelled in basketball. She was offered two full-ride scholarships to play basketball but turned them down. She attended Iowa State University for a year before she was married. Nov. 26, 1960, Sue was united in marriage to James Eichhorn at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Brooklyn. To this union four children were born: Jeff, Julie, John, and Joseph. Sue worked at the Hartwick State Bank for over 23 years before turning their home into the English Valley Bed and Breakfast, owning and operating it for several years. Sue was very active at the bed and breakfast by hosting weddings, anniversary parties, graduation parties, seasonal hunters, and returning customers over the years. After they sold the bed and breakfast, Sue and Jim were asked to help start the Linden House Bed and Breakfast in Lynnville running it for a few years.
Sue enjoyed quilting, gardening, antiques, fishing, loved her flowers and her horses, and was an excellent cook. She was proud to have hosted three foreign exchange students over the years from Japan, Thailand, and Italy. She was a member of St. Pat-rick’s Catholic Church in Brooklyn and most recently attended Jackson Church of Christ in Montezuma. She was also an active member of Crazy Cut Ups Quilt Group, Peacemakers Quilt Group, and the Montqu Antique Group. She also served on the Poweshiek County Historical and Genealogy Society for several years where she served as president and was instrumental with having the Fitzsimmons Country School moved to its current location in Montezuma along with relocating the historical society to the 100-year-old Carnegie building and getting the museum up and running in the old Poweshiek County Sheriff’s building, all in Montezuma.
Her legacy will be honored by her husband Jim; her daughter Julie (Jeffery) Johnson of St. Augustine, FL; her son John Eichhorn of Barnes City; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; her sister Charleen O’Halloran of Montezuma; her brother Robert (Terri) O’Halloran of Phoenix, AZ; and nieces, nephews, and many friends.
Sue was preceded in death by her parents and two sons Jeff Eichhorn and Joseph Eichhorn.
