Stan Hoogeveen, 95

Stanley W. Hoogeveen, 95, of Pella and formerly of Sully, passed away Dec. 31, 2020. Family funeral service was held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 2, at Sully Christian Reformed Church. Memorials are designated for Sully Christian School and Megan’s Legacy, c/o Mike Hoogeveen, PO Box 343, Sully, IA 50251.

Stanley Willis Hoogeveen was born Aug. 5, 1925, to Henry and Gertrude (Roelofs) Hoogeveen in Prinsburg, MN. Stan grew up in the Prinsburg area, attended Calvin College, and received his master’s degree from Drake University.

Mar. 14, 1946, he was united in marriage to Clara Van Hove at the Emden Christian Reformed Church of Renville, MN. To this union, five children were born: Linda, Carol, Steve, Phil, and Michael.

Stan was a B24 tail gunner and served in the European Theater of World War II.

Stan loved teaching and was the principal of Sully Christian School for many years. In the summers, he often worked as a carpenter. Stan continued woodworking and made countless items for his family and friends. Family was always important to Stan, and he relished spending time with them, from Sunday dinners to the big Christmas party! He loved making classroom visits to his grandchildrens’ schools to talk about his time in the war. In the summers, he spent much time in his garden. Stan and Clara were avid travelers and enjoyed camping all over the United States and Canada. Lately, they enjoyed sitting together watching the eagles below the dam.

Stan was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter Carol, his son Steve, his granddaughter Megan Hoogeveen, his grandson David Hoogeveen, and his siblings Angie (Robert) Gort, Esther (Anthony) Zondervan, Eva (Lester) Brouwer, Helen (Delmar) Mulder, Lorraine Hoogeveen, and Harry Hoogeveen.

Stan is survived by his wife of 74 years, Clara; his children and their families: Linda (Terry) Zylstra, Wes Van Wyk, Connie Hoogeveen, Phil (Barb) Hoogeveen, Michael (Brittany) Hoogeveen; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; and his sister-in-law Lydia Hoogeveen of Wilmar, MN.
