Shawna Maasdam, 50

Shawna Maasdam, 50, of Sully, bravely fought cancer for a year and a half and passed away at the Comfort House in Pella on Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2023.

Funeral services were at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 6, at Sully First Reformed Church and private committal service at Sully Cemetery. Memorials have been designated for Hospice of Pella and Sully First Reformed Church Children's Worship Program.

Shawna Beth Scholten-Maasdam was born Dec. 4, 1972, and her parents were Arie and Elaine Scholten. She grew up in Sully, attended Sully Christian School, and was a 1991 graduate of Lynnville-Sully High School. She went on to major in art at Central College in Pella.

June 17, 1994, she was united in marriage to Douglas Maasdam at Sully Christian Reformed Church. To this union they were blessed with two children Brett and Kaylee.

Shawna was a member of Sully First Reformed Church where she was the children’s worship leader for more than 10 years. She worked in graphic design for ETC Enterprises in Grinnell, and more recently, she worked for Brownells in Grinnell. In her spare time, Shawna enjoyed knitting hats and baby blankets, volunteering for kindergarten round-up, and gardening. She was very supportive of her children and never missed their activities. Shawna loved to photograph Kaylee playing sports and Brett racing.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband Doug and their children Brett and Kaylee, parents Arie and Elaine Scholten, mother-in-law Carleen Maasdam, brother Eric Scholten, and sister Suzanne (Josh) Rozendaal. Shawna is also survived by Doug’s siblings Darrell (Susan Burg) Maasdam, Dwayne Maasdam, and Cheri (Jesse) Vander Weerdt.

Shawna was preceded in death by her father-in-law Harlan Maasdam.
