Roy M. Spangenburg, 91, of Lynnville, passed away Thursday, Dec. 26, 2013, at the Iowa Veteran’s Home in Marshalltown. Funeral services were Dec. 31 at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home in New Sharon. Burial was in the Hewitt Cemetery near Reasnor.
Roy Merlyn Spangenburg, the son of Ben and Mae (Strauccer) Spangenburg, was born July 19, 1922, in Kings Ferry, NY. He attended school in Rochester, NY. Roy enlisted in the United States Army in 1939 and was honorably discharged in 1941. On Nov, 16, 1941, Roy was united in marriage to Bernice Elwell in PennYan, NY. Roy farmed in the Barrie Center, NY, area before opening a lawn mower service in the late 1960s. Roy moved to Lynnville in 1992 because he loved Iowa. He enjoyed fishing, dancing, playing his guitar, and being around family and friends. He was a member of an American Legion Post in Albion, NY.
His memory will be cherished by his son, Raymond (Betty) Spangenburg of Lynnville; his daughter, Nancy (Randy) Hecko of Oakfield, NY; 14 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Marge (Fredrick) Krahenbuhl; two daughters-in-law, Marilyn De Lorenzo and Sue Thomas; and a son-in-law, Al Share.
Roy was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Bernice on Mar. 21, 2007; two sons, Roy E. Spangenburg and Gene Spangenburg; two daughters, Carol Ann Spangenburg in infancy and Norma Jean Share; a great- granddaughter, Kristen Shipman; and his siblings, Emery, Marian, Edward, Carl, Rita, Myron, Robert, Lee, Harlan, and Dorothy.
