Paul Vos was born the tenth of 12 children to Dirk and Jennie (Bruxvoort) Vos on a farm three miles west of Sully on Jan. 16, 1927. He was baptized at Sully Christian Reformed Church.
Paul said it was always fun to be part of a large family. His boyhood years were spent on the farm near Sully and on a farm near Pella. He received his education in both Jasper and Marion County Schools. Paul’s first real paying job as a boy was bringing fresh water to the threshing crew for a neighbor and was paid one dollar per day. He pooled his money with brothers John and Harold to buy a used bicycle for $9.21. Paul’s first car was a 1938 Chevrolet. Paul made profession of his faith at Second Christian Reformed Church in Pella, where he met Marjorie Van Den Berg from Otley. After dating a while, Paul and Marjorie were married Aug. 12, 1948, in Otley. They farmed in the Galesburg and Monroe area until 1986, when they moved to Pella. Paul and Marjorie enjoyed their travels to several states in the lower 48, as well as Alaska, Hawaii, Europe, and fishing trips to Canada.
Paul and Marjorie had four children: Byron in 1949, Arvin in 1951, Mark in 1954, and Ruth in 1958. Sorrow came into Paul’s life when after 59 years of marriage, Marjorie passed away Oct. 14, 2007.
Paul was united in marriage to Marilyn Ruth (Van Gorp) Van Wyk on Jan. 3, 2009, at Calvary Christian Reformed Church.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife Marilyn and his children and their families, Arvin (Laura) Vos of Pella and Mark Vos of Brooklyn; his brother Harold (Carolyn) Vos; his brothers-in-law Rev. John Van Den Berg and Arie Boot; and Marilyn’s children and their families: Bonnie and John Verburg, Norma and David Y’Dean, Karen and Edwin Spoelstra, Rosa and Bernie Veenstra, Diane and Bob Mitchell, and Joy and Steve Flinchum.
He was preceded in death by his wife Marjorie, his son Byron in infancy, his daughter Ruth Swihart, his parents Dirk and Jennie Vos, his sisters Clazena (Henry) Roelofsen, Dirkie (William) Bandstra, Adrianna (Jake) Jansen, Rosie Van Den Berg, Helen Vos, and Laura (Andrew) Slings; his brothers Bernie (Johanna) Vos, William (Marjorie) Vos, Richard (Wilma) Vos, Marion (Annette) Vos, and John (Alma) Vos; and his sisters-and brothers-in-law Junella (Lester) Van Haaften, Wilma (Neal) De Ronde, Josephine (Howard) Gosselink, Delos (Angie) Van Den Berg, and Alveretta Boot.
