Michael G. Nikkel, 54

Michael G. Nikkel, 54, of Sully, passed away unex-pectedly Wednesday night, Oct. 12, 2016, at his home.

Funeral services were held Monday, Oct. 17, at Sully Christian Reformed Church. Interment followed in Sully Cemetery. Memorials may be designated for Sully Christian School.

Michael Gene Nikkel was the youngest of six children born to Dewey and Elizabeth “Betty” (Lanser) Nikkel. He was born Mar. 3, 1962, in Pella. Mike attended Sully Christian School and graduated from Pella Christian High School with the Class of 1980.

Following his graduation, he worked for a short time with his dad and brothers at Nick’s Farm Service. Sept. 9, 1983, he and Valerie Jane Boender, whom he met during high school, were united in marriage at Calvary Christian Reformed Church in Pella. Mike and Val were blessed with four children. They raised their children in Sully where Mike was always very supportive and eager to share his faith and countless gifts and talents.

Mike spent most of his career working as an electrician. He began his career commuting back and forth to Ames and was later employed in Pella at Precision Pulley and Gritters Electric for 15 years each. Most recently, he worked as a maintenance specialist at Vermeer Corporation in Pella. His life ended unexpectedly on Wednesday evening, Oct. 12, 2016, upon returning home.

Mike had served on the Sully Christian School Board and was a lifelong member of the Sully Christian Reformed Church where he had served as a deacon, youth leader, Cadet leader, and on many committees. He had a great desire to ensure all those around him knew Christ.

As his family copes with their loss in his death, they are relying on their faith to support and carry them through. Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Val, of Sully; their four children: Nathanael (Rachel) Nikkel, Natasha Nikkel, Shelby (Brennan) Veenstra, all of Pella, and Miranda Nikkel, a student at Trinity Christian College in Palos Heights, IL; his mother, Betty Nikkel of Pella; and brothers and sisters: Carroll (Jennifer) Nikkel of Maxwell, Robert (Rosemary) Nikkel of Sully, Linda (Daryl) Menninga of Sully, Douglas Nikkel of Lynnville, and Diana Mick of Kellogg. Mike also leaves the following sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Linda (Jerry) Beyer of Knoxville, Alan (Joyce) Boender, and Sheryl (Darrell) Goodyk, all of Pella; along with a host of other relatives.

Mike was preceded in death by his father, Dewey Nikkel; his sisters-in-law, Jean (Robert) Nikkel, and Norma (Carroll) Nikkel; his parents-in-law, John and Edna (Slings) Boender; and a brother-in-law, Jerry Wayne Boender.
