Marion Pol, 86

Marion Pol, 86, of Pella passed away peacefully on May 4, 2016, at Comfort House in Pella with his family by his side. Funeral services were held Monday, May 9, at Trinity Reformed Church, Pella. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Pella.

Marion Pol was born June 1, 1929, in Otley, the second child of Peter and Irene (Langstraat) Pol. The only school Marion attended was a one-room school in Otley. After graduating from the eighth grade, he helped his parents on the farm and took care of livestock. Marion was a member of Trinity Reformed Church, but made profession of faith on Oct. 2, 1947, at Otley Reformed Church.

Marion married Alberta Grace Terpstra on June 4, 1952, at the Sully Christian Reformed Church. To this union they were blessed with five children. They farmed near his parents by Otley until 1966, and then rented two different farms in the Lynnville-Sully area for the next 17 years. After over 50 years of living and working on farms, Marion decided he wanted to do something different. In November 1983, they had a farm sale and bought a small acreage by Lake Red Rock. Over the next several years, he worked for Skunk River Block and Pallets, Pella Plastics, and Ring O’Matic. In April 2002, life took another change when Marion had a stroke. He recovered enough to be able to help Alberta with her dog kennels and enjoyed mowing the yard on their riding lawn mower. On June 6, 2006, they moved to Pella where they bought a house on East University Street. Since 2012, Marion has been cared for by the staff at the hospital skilled care, long term care, and the Cottages. Marion and Alberta celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary last year.

Marion is survived by his wife Alberta; his children: Merrill (Lana) Pol of Pella, Marla (Kevin) Renaud of Pella, Karla Vander Wert of Pella, Janice (Steven) De Graaf of Pella, and Malinda Pol of Des Moines; 16 grandchildren; 28 great-grand-children; one great-great-grandchild; brother Leonard Pol of Pella; and sister Jeanette Van Hall of Pella.

Marion was preceded in death by his parents; parents-in-law Dick and Minnie Terpstra; his sister and brother-in-law Wilma and Jake Goodyk; brother-in-law Hank Van Hall; brothers and sisters-in-law Raymond and Irene Bennick, Donna Asher, and Marvin May; son-in-law Craig Vander Wert; and two grandchildren Eric Shacklett and Rich Brackett.
