Marie L. Vande Weerd Hardenbrook, the daughter of Brunis and Bertha Kingma VandeWeerd, was born Feb. 24, 1929, in Newton. She graduated from Newton High School in 1947.

Mar. 31, 1948, Marie was united in marriage with Dan M. Hardenbrook at the First Assembly of God Church in Newton. They were blessed with three children, Janet, Joyce, and Jim. Marie was a homemaker and church organist for 50+ years. She was a member of Newton First Assembly of God Church. Marie as the church organist played for the morning and evening services, plus mid-week services and many weeks of revivals. She accompanied soloists and guest musicians, played for countless weddings and funerals, including as a regular accompanist for the Wallace Funeral Home at their prior downtown location. In her earlier days, Marie and her sister, Elizabeth, would play duets on their Hawaiian guitars. Growing up, Marie was a big help to her dad on the farm, driving tractors and rounding up the dairy cows. She could speak a decent amount of Dutch, and Marie will be remembered for making each Christmas and Easter family gathering a very special event.

Marie went to be with her Lord on Sunday, Sept. 6, 2020, at her home in Park Centre in Newton with her children at her side. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Dan in 2014, and sister and brother-in-law Elizabeth and Emil Gerard.
