Joel Henning, 54

Joel Henning, 54, of Grinnell died Sunday, July 9, 2017, at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines.

He was born Nov. 11, 1962, in Newton, the son of Carl L. and Janice (Van Gent) Henning. He went to Lynnville-Sully High School where he was a state champion wrestler. He also played football and baseball. He graduated from Lynnville-Sully High School with the Class of 1981. He furthered his education at Upper Iowa University in Fayette where he continued to wrestle and earned his BA in business in 1984.

Following graduation from college, Joel started his career in financial services. He worked most of his career as a stockbroker for various companies. He was united in marriage to Stephanie Griefe. To this union a daughter, Carlie, was born. The two of them later divorced.

He enjoyed field trials and quail hunting. He was a talented hunting and field trial dog trainer and handler. He also enjoyed golfing. His daughter Carlie was the light of his life, and he looked forward to spending as much time with her as possible.

His family includes his daughter Carlie Henning of Grinnell; a sister, Julia (Tony) Ross of Oskaloosa; a brother, Jeff (Laurie) Henning of Grinnell; a niece, Bethany (Brian) Gott; two nephews, Jacob Ross and Calvin Korns; two great-nephews, Owen Gott and Brydon Henning; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a nephew, Dustin Henning; and a niece, Jenny Korns.

As was Joel’s wish, his body has been cremated and no visitation is planned. There will be a celebration of life service held at a later date. The Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa is in charge of the arrangements. Memorials may be made to the Joel Henning Memorial Fund to be used for Carlie’s education.
