Howard De Penning, 86, of Sully, passed away Aug. 3, 2025. Visitation will be 4-6 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 7, at Sully First Reformed Church. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m., Friday, Aug. 8, at Sully First Reformed Church followed by interment in Sully Cemetery.
Howard Duane De Penning was born July 13, 1939, to Herman and Lucille (Van Wyk) De Penning. Howard grew up in Sully and was a 1957 graduate of Sully High School.
Apr. 17, 1959, he was united in marriage to Lucile Vander Zyl at Sully First Reformed Church. To this union, they were blessed with three sons: Scott, Eric, and Kyle.
Howard worked for Vermeer Manufacturing in ag parts for 19 years and also worked for Van Wyk Freight for 20 years. He enjoyed woodworking, crafting furniture for family gifts, church, toys, etc. He kept an immaculate lawn and maintained his home even up to the spring before his death. He also helped out friends with their home projects. Howard enjoyed volunteering, delivering meals once a week from the church to the community. He liked having coffee time and regular morning meetings with a group of friends.
Those left to cherish his memory are his sons Scott De Penning of Pella, Eric (Lynette) De Penning of Newton, and Kyle De Penning of Urbandale; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Carroll (Nancy) De Penning of Newton.
Howard was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, his parents-in-law Ralph and Francis Vander Zyl, and his brother Larry De Penning.
