Harold Hoksbergen, 86

Harold Hoksbergen, 86, of Pella, left to join his Lord on Mar. 23, 2016, at Jefferson Place, Pella. Funeral services were held Saturday, Mar. 26, at Faith Christian Reformed Church, Pella. Memorials have been designated for Wesley Life Hospice.

Harold Edwin Hoksbergen was born Mar. 31, 1929, to Ray and Johanna (Van Haaften) Hoksbergen at the family’s farm northeast of Leighton.

Harold could only attend one year at Pella Christian High School as he had to help run the family farm after his father was stricken. In 1947, he met Clazina De Jong and courted her for three years before their marriage Nov. 2, 1950, in Sully. Harold was drafted into the Army in 1951 and after training at Ft. Leonard Wood, MO, served in Korea. He attained the rank of Sergeant and after an honorable discharge in 1953 was an active member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.

Harold was a very successful farmer in the Lynnville/Taintor area and provided for Clazina and their growing family. From their union five children were born. Harold continued farming full-time until 1980. He also worked as a Conklin salesman and as a custodian at both Central College and Heritage Lace. In his free time, Harold enjoyed bicycling on the Volksweg bike trails around Lake Red Rock, bowling, gardening, and working in his yard.   Harold and Clazina also enjoyed traveling and visiting their family and grandchildren wherever they were living.

Harold grew up in the Peoria Christian Reformed Church. After moving his family to Pella in 1970 so that their children could be closer to Pella Christian High, the couple attended Faith Christian Reformed Church in Pella. Harold was very active in his church, attending and teaching Sunday school and serving as an elder and deacon.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife Clazina Hoksbergen of Pella; his children: Ron (Marlyn) Hoksbergen of Pella, Carroll (Elizabeth) Hoksbergen of Lynnville, Cindy (Gary) Vandenburg of Pella, and Donna (Barry) Ferguson of Monroe and Paris, France; his son-in-law, Dan Criger of Norwalk; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his sisters: Lois (John) Klyn of Pella, Dorothy Rus of Pella, Alma (Loren) Witzenburg of Pella, and Theresa (Don) Bruxvoort of South Haven, MI.

He was preceded in death by his parents, parents-in-law Everett and Allie De Jong, brother Ralph Hoksbergen, brother-in-law Jake Rus, two nieces Judy and Julie Klyn, daughter Charlene Criger, and sister Janice Hoksbergen.
