Dorothy Smool, 90

Dorothy Colleen (Halterman) Smool, 90, of New-ton died Monday, Apr. 10, 2017, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Apr. 14, at Wallace Family Funeral Home and Cremator, Newton. The family will greet friends from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, Apr. 13, at the funeral home. Memorials in Dorothy’s name may be left at the funeral home.

Dorothy, the daughter of Marion Noah and Vera Effie (Short) Halterman, was born Mar. 18, 1927, in Grinnell. She grew up and attended school in Grinnell. Dec. 21, 1945, Dorothy was united in marriage with Virgil “Pete” Smool. In 1965, they moved to Newton. Dorothy worked for 20 years in the laundry area at Skiff Medical Center. After retiring, she took care of her husband. Following her husband’s death in 1996, Dorothy got her driver’s license at the age of 69.

Dorothy was a member of the VFW Post 1655 and Community Heights Alliance Church. She also loved spending time with her grandchildren and gardening.

Dorothy is survived by her son, Gary (Janelle) Smool of Sun Lakes, AZ; daughter, Connie (JR) Wilcox of Newton; grandchildren, Erica (Dale) Maston of Killduff, Gerald (Vanessa Chavez) Wilcox of Newton, Colleen (Nick) Lepley of Sully, Rusty (Amy Levelle) Wilcox of Kellogg, Justin Smool of Bagley, and Jaron Smool of Sun Lakes, AZ; her 14 great-grandchildren; brother, Donald Halterman of Indianola; and her many nieces, nephews, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Virgil “Pete” in 1996; brothers, Martin and Robert Halterman; and a sister, Mildred Garr.
