Dorothy Hitchcock, 73

Dorothy Mae Hitchcock, 73, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2023, at her home in Muscatine. Funeral service was held at 11 a.m., Friday, Nov. 3, at Coburn Funeral Home in Colfax. Pastor Phil Dicks officiated. There was a visitation prior to service as well as on Thursday, Nov. 2, at Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home, Muscatine. Memorials may be made to High Prairie Methodist Church and Colfax United Methodist Church.

Dorothy was born Oct. 11, 1950, in Reasnor, the daughter of Kenneth and Anna (Stanton) Aikin. She grew up in rural Reasnor and lived in Arkansas for several years before returning to Iowa, where she graduated from Monroe High School in 1968. She received her associate degree from DMACC in 1978 and then worked very hard to receive her BSN from Grand View  College in August of 2000. She married Lysle “Skip” Hitchcock on May 28, 1983, in The Little Brown Church, Nashua. Dorothy worked as a nurse and was very proud to be a nurse, especially working on the oncology wing at Des Moines General Hospital and working as a school nurse in the Des Moines School District for eight years.  Dorothy taught Sunday school and enjoyed participating in church activities. She also enjoyed watching her kids and her grandchildren playing sports and other activities, reading, sewing, and making clothes for her children. During the summer, she would spend several hours canning produce from the garden.

Dorothy is survived by her husband Skip; children: Michelle Lewis and significant other Rodney, Duane Cooper and significant other Kari, Mark Hitchcock, and Amy (Clint) Hansen; grandchildren: Brianna Cooper, Jade (Chris) Warner and their daughter Alayah, Alex Lewis, Deklan Lewis, and Eleanor Hitchcock; siblings: Rita Maston, Linda Hammock, Mary McJunkins, Charles (Maria) Aikin, Raymond (Denise) Aikin, and Kendall Aikin; sisters-in-law: Edith Aikin, Vickie (Ron) Smith, and Brenda Hitchcock; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother James Aikin; sister Margaret Vasseau; brothers-in-law: John P. Hitchcock, Ben Vasseau, and Chuck Maston; niece Dianna Vasseau; and son-in-law Jamie Lewis.
