Dorothy Hiemstra, 74

Dorothy Hiemstra of Knoxville passed away Sunday, Apr. 28, 2024, at her home surrounded by her family, at the age of 74 years.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Living Word Fellowship in Knoxville. Visitation was 4-7 p.m., May 3 at Jenkins Center, Knoxville.  Burial was in Graceland Cemetery, Knoxville.

Dorothy Joan Hiemstra was born Dec. 3, 1949, in Oskaloosa, the daughter of Andrew and La Verda (Van Wyk) De Nooy.

She was raised in the Leighton and Pella areas. Nov. 21, 1968, Dorothy was united in marriage to Stanley Ray Hiemstra at Third Reformed Church in Pella. The couple first lived in Monroe before moving to the Knoxville area in 1970. Dorothy enjoyed being a homemaker and raising her family. She also owned and operated New Life Christian Bookstore for several years in the 1980s. Dorothy was a devoted member of Living Word Fellowship in Knoxville.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother Carroll De Nooy; maternal grandparents John and Ella (Wyngarden) Van Wyk; paternal grandparents John Arie and Christina Johanna (Gonlag) De Nooy; and in-laws Harold Hiemstra, Alvin Hiemstra, Lonnah Hiemstra, Glen Hiemstra, and Wayne Hugen.

Those left to cherish Dorothy’s memory include her husband Stan; children and their families: Sandra Lynn (LaVerne) Brackett of Indianola and their children: Kaitlynn Brown and Ethan Brown; Julie Renee (Mike) Miles of Checotah, OK, and their children: Mark (Leah) Miles, Jonathan (Audrey) Miles, Ryan Miles and Renee Miles; Brian Ray (Kris) Hiemstra of Knoxville and their children: Jacob Hiemstra, Emerson Hiemstra, Kenzie (Austin) Cordes and Kennedy McDonald; and Bradley Ray (Kim) Hiemstra of Pella, and their children: Kyli Hiemstra, Elah Hiemstra, Vyncent Hiemstra, Addyson Hiemstra, and Hudson Hiemstra; as well as her siblings Arvin (Brenda) De Nooy of Sully, Ron De Nooy of Reasnor, Bonnie De Nooy of Sully, Carla (Les) Nieuwsma of Pella, and Deb De Nooy of Sioux Center; in-laws Marvin (Viv) Hiemstra, Ruth Hugen, Norma Hiemstra, and Karen Hiemstra; and many other family members and friends.
