Doris Bryan, 94

Doris Bryan, 94, of Lynnville, passed away on Monday, Nov. 11, 2019, at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell under the care of UnityPoint Grinnell Regional Hospice.

A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 15, at Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with the Rev. John Epperson officiating.  Interment was at Woodland Cemetery in Lynnville.

Doris Amelia Hasselbrink was born the daughter of William and Elsie (Henning) Hasselbrink on July 31, 1925, at her parents’ home in rural Jasper County. She was raised on the family farm north of Lynnville and attended Armstrong Country School north of Kellogg and Frog Pond Country School until the eighth grade. She graduated from Grinnell High School with the Class of 1944.

Doris was united in marriage to Richard Anderson in January 1943 and the couple resided and farmed near Grinnell until their union ended. She met Charles Bryan at a dance where his band was playing, and they were married on Mar. 17, 1971, in Bettendorf. They made their home in Lynnville with Charlie's four sons: Keith, Kyle, Kerry, and Kelly. Throughout her lifetime, Doris was employed at Safeway and JCPenney’s in Grinnell and Gosselink’s Grocery in Lynnville.

Doris’ family was most important in her life. She dearly loved her children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. She enjoyed gardening, baking, going to dances, playing cards, solving word finds, fishing with Charlie, and following her grandchildren's activities. She will be remembered for her kind yet shy personality, for being a hard worker, and for the strong love of her family.

Doris is survived by her children:  Kyle (Skye) Bryan of Searsboro,  Kerry (Marlene) Bryan of Searsboro, and Kelly (Sammi) Bryan of Lynnville; six grandchildren: Crystal (Justin) Montgomery of Lynnville, Candy Boyd of Paris, TX, Brandon Bryan of Sully, Kasey Bryan of Grinnell, Brooke Bryan of Sully, Dallas Bryan of Tiffin; six great-grandchildren: Lannon Montgomery (Crystal); Kye, Mariah, Charley, and Levi Bryan (Brandon); Sawyer Osborn (Brooke); several nieces and nephews; and her goddaughter, Cindie (Dave) Schlater of Exira.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Virginia Pratt, Donald Hasselbrink, Edward Hasselbrink, Richard Hasselbrink, June Hasselbrink, and Wayne Hasselbrink; husband, Charles Bryan in 2009; son, Keith Bryan in 1991; and granddaughter, Charity Bryan in 2013.
