Clifford Eugene Saboe, 90, of Marshalltown and formerly of West Union, died Mar. 25, 2014, at the Iowa Veterans Home.
A graveside memorial service will be held at the West Union Cemetery on Saturday, Apr. 5, at 11 a.m. for family and friends. Following the service, the family will be present for visitation at the Fayette County Historical Society from 1-3 p.m.
Clifford, son of Colben S. and Emma (Juvick) Saboe, was born Sept. 4, 1923, in West Union. He was a member of the West Union High School Class of 1941. After graduation, Clifford attended college at Upper Iowa in Fayette. As part of an Army officer training program, he attended college in Spearfish, SD, before being stationed in France, Germany, and Austria during WWII.
On June 17, 1951, Clifford married Alma Ann Hausladen in Burlington. They were the parents of three children: Sheri Ann, Mark Eugene, and Diane Mary, who died in infancy. Together they enjoyed traveling. Alma preceded him in death on Oct. 14, 2000.
Clifford worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 32 years, retiring as Postmaster in 1979. Clifford was also co-owner and operator with his wife of West Union Oil Co. for 25 years. He enjoyed genealogy and collecting stamps, coins, and numerous other items.
In 2008, Clifford moved to the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown. A year later, he was privileged to be on the first Honor Flight for military veterans from Iowa. It was an emotional and unforgettable experience for him.
Those left to honor his memory include his daughter, Sheri (Russell) Hughes of Searsboro; his son, Mark of Dubuque; seven grandchildren: Dr. Lauren Hughes of Ann Arbor, MI, Erin Hughes of Chantepie, France, Katelyn Hughes of Spencer, Benjamin Saboe of Marion, Sara (Scott) Miller of Columbia Heights, MN, Mark A. Saboe of Dubuque, and Nicholas Saboe of Iowa City; a daughter-in-law, Karen Saboe of Dubuque; and many nieces and nephews. Clifford was preceded in death by his wife, daughter, parents, and brothers Maurice, Orville, and Lester.
