Chuck Maston, 66

Charles “Chuck” Vern Maston, Jr., 66, of Killduff, passed away Thurs-day, Oct. 20, 2022, with family by his side at the Comfort House in Pella. A visitation was held Tuesday, Oct. 25, at Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory in Newton. Memorials in Chuck’s name (checks made payable to Rita Maston) may be left at the funeral home to be used for a bench at the Lynnville-Sully baseball field and for the Killduff Park.

Chuck was born Nov. 9, 1955, the oldest son of Charles and Margaret “Peggy” Maston. He graduated from Newton High School with the Class of 1974. On Dec. 12, 1975, Chuck married the love of his life, Rita Aikin, in Reasnor. Chuck and Rita were blessed with three sons – Craig Allen, Dale Robert, and Brian Charles. Chuck was actively involved in his sons’ lives and enjoyed sharing his love of baseball, hunting, and fishing with them. He coached little league baseball for many years and was always a strong supporter of his children’s activities.

Chuck worked for Killduff Feed and Grain as a feed truck driver for many years before becoming a member of the Jasper County Highway Department. He retired in 2018 after 27 years of service with the county. During retirement, Chuck enjoyed day trips to the casino with Rita and friends, fishing whenever he wanted, and relishing time spent with his eight grandchildren. Chuck and Rita’s door was always open and was often a revolving door welcoming grandkids every day, all day.

Chuck was a hard-working man whose greatest joy was his family. His grandchildren were his pride and joy, and he always made sure they were aware of his devotion. Chuck and Rita chased their grandkids to their various activities all across the state, never missing an event. Whether it be watching his grandkids play his favorite sport of baseball or sitting through a three-hour dance recital for a three-minute glimpse of his girl, Chuck was there.  What was important to his family, Chuck made it of utmost importance to him and was always a source of unwavering support. He was his grandkids’ Number-one fan, and his presence in their lives will be greatly missed. Chuck also enjoyed fishing, deer hunting with “the boys,” playing cards with friends, camping, and cheering on the Hawks and Cardinals. His grandkids loved it when he would challenge them in a cornhole tournament.

Left to honor Chuck’s memory are his wife of 46 years, Rita Maston of Killduff; three sons and their families, Craig (Karla) Maston of Jefferson, Cody, and Chad; Dale (Erica) Maston of Killduff, Brooke, Payton, and Blake; and Brian (Jessica) Maston of Killduff, Conner, Carson, and Haley; his brother Donnie (Diana) Maston of Solon and their family. He is also survived by Rita’s family including brothers- and sisters-in-law Mary McJunkins, Linda Hammock, Charles (Maria) Aikin, Dorothy (Skip) Hitchcock, Edith Aikin, Raymond (Denise) Aikin, and Kendall Aikin and their families.

Chuck was preceded in death by his parents; brother Michael Maston; parents-in-law Kenneth and Anna Aikin; brothers- and sister-in-law James Aikin and Margaret and Ben Vasseau; and niece Dianna Vasseau.
