Carl D. Horman, 92, of Pella, passed away Wednesday, June 7, 2023, at Hospice of Pella Comfort House. Funeral services were held 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, June 13, at Trinity Reformed Church, Pella. Interment followed in the Oakwood Cemetery, Pella. Memorial contributions are preferred for Gideons International or Hospice of Pella Comfort House.
Carl Duane Horman was the seventh of 10 children born to Edward and Marie (Koorevaar) Horman on Jan. 5, 1931, east of Monroe. Carl graduated eighth grade from White Breast Country School near Fifield and stayed home to help his father farm. Jan. 10, 1952, he married his neighbors’ daughter, Leona Mae De Raad, at the Otley Reformed Church. Carl and Leona farmed in the Galesburg area for 36 years and retired in 1999 moving into Pella. Carl made his profession of faith at Otley Reformed Church as a teenager and served the church and his Lord many years on consistory and building committees, and as a Sunday school teacher and small group leader. Carl joined The Gideons in the early 90s and was involved in prison ministries at Newton Release Center. He also served on other boards: Jasper County Farm Bureau, Lynnville- Sully School Board, Central Iowa Power Co-op, and Pella Cooperative Electric Board for 24 years. Carl and Leona observed their 70th wedding anniversary Jan. 10, 2022, and were residents at Independence Village when he passed away at the Hospice of Pella Comfort House on June 7, 2023, at the age of 92 years. Carl made many friends over the years and will be missed by them and his family.
He is survived by his wife Leona; two children Gale Gene Horman of Sully and Denise Lynne Horman of Sully; three grandchildren; and seven great- grandchildren.
Carl is also survived by sisters-in-law Carolyn (John Horman) Burke and Daisy (Edwin) Horman.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers: Joe and Dorothy, Martin “Mike” and Ellen Jean, Marion “Pete” and Vera, Edwin and Janice, and Larry “John” Horman; four sisters and their husbands: Ellen and Norman Dunaway, Geneva and Peter R. Swank, Jean and Setrith Menninga, and Linda Marie Horman; parents-in-law Jasper and Marie De Raad; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law Arthur and Alta Marie De Raad.
