Brian Steine, 73

Brian Lee Steine, 73, of Grinnell, died Sept. 19, 2021, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. U.S. Navy flag presentation ceremony was at 10 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 24, at Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell.

Brian was born Jan. 26, 1948, in Geneseo, IL, the son of Norman Gerhart and Elsie Mae Richter Steine. He was raised in Geneseo and was a 1967 graduate of Geneseo High School.

Brian was a veteran of the United States Navy during the Vietnam War (1967-1970) and served on the USS Ashtabula. He was very proud of his military service. Upon discharge, he moved to the Quad Cities and was employed at Mr. Donut and then with Quint City Ford. He later lived in Searsboro, Lynnville, Newton, Baxter, and then Grinnell. During that time, he was employed with the Lynnville-Sully School District, Newton Correctional Facility, and while in Grinnell with Hy-Vee.

Mar. 19, 1982, he was united in marriage to Teina Marie Sager in Newton.
Brian loved baseball: He held a passion for many years collecting baseball cards, was an avid fan of the Atlanta Braves, and for 14 years he coached Little League baseball. He admired and followed John Wayne, Elvis, and President John F. Kennedy. He enjoyed cooking and baking and loved his dog Bandit and his cat Daisy Mae.

Brian is survived by his wife Teina of Grinnell; four children, Teeocka McGrath of Idaho, Sarah (Tom Kinzebach) Steine of Gibson, Aaron Steine of Grinnell, and April (Joel Teska) Steine of Arkansas; three grandchildren, Cayden and Kylee Kinzebach, and Gracelynn Teska.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a nephew Ryan Van Hemert; and two uncles, Lyle and Maynard Steine.

Per Brian’s wishes, he was cremated and his ashes scattered at sea in honor of his Naval service. The family would like to thank the doctors and staff at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for their care and support.
