Anna Mae Hartgers was born May 6, 1938, near Sully and was the fourth of five children born to Tunis and Cora (Olsthoorn) Hartgers. Anna Mae graduated from Sully High School in 1956, the last class before the merger of Lynnville and Sully Schools. June 15, 1956, she was united in marriage with Cornelius Arvin Van Wyk at Sully First Reformed Church. To this union, three children were born: Steven Craig, Jana Lynn, and Sharla Mae. Anna Mae began working at the Sully Co-op Creamery, and then when Arvin was done with boot camp joined him in North Carolina while he was in the United States Army. Steve was born during this time. She worked in the laundry at Fair Haven in Pella for several years with her best friend Linda, and for many years also cut lace at home for Heritage Lace in Pella until they closed. In 1966, Arvin and Anna Mae began farming independently for 13 years north of Pella. In 1971, they purchased land in the Sandridge area north of Pella where they continued to farm until their retirement. Anna Mae farmed as well and did field cultivation and ran the combine during harvest. She even did this at the age of 83! Anna Mae also had a very large garden and did lots of canning, and had many flower gardens she enjoyed taking care of, as well as raising and butchering chickens and selling eggs. Arvin passed away Dec. 10, 2021, at the age of 86 years. Anna Mae remained in their home until she moved into The Cottages in April of 2024.
She is survived by her three children: Steve (Janis) Van Wyk of Pella, Jana (Mike) Proffitt of Knoxville, and Sharla (Ivan) Van Kooten of Leighton; nine grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
Anna Mae is also survived by her siblings Barb Hartgers, Vernon and Marge Hartgers, all of Newton, and Marlene Hartgers of Pella. Arvin dearly loved his sisters, and Anna Mae had a special bond with each of them: Joyce and Carl De Goey of Newton, Darlene and Harris Vos of Sully, Helen and Verlan Brand of Grinnell, Carolyn Vande Voort, Judy and Ed Van Kooten, all of Sully, and a brother-in-law Eldred Van Gorp of Newton.
Anna Mae was preceded in death by her husband Arvin, her parents, great-grandchild Tegan Theune, and her three brothers Melvin, Louie, and Harry Hartgers.
Anna Mae's faith was very important to her. She made profession of her faith at Sully First Reformed Church and was a longtime member of Sully Christian Reformed Church. She loved annual family vacations to the Ozarks and Christmas vacations to the Amana Colonies with the entire family. She really enjoyed having fun and playing cards and games, and traveling with their friends and family, as well as gardening and canning. Her family and grandkids brought joy and love into her life - they will miss her dearly.
