Long-time Sully resident and full-time jokester Darrell Zegers will serve as the 2026 Grand Marshal for Sully’s Fourth of July parade.
By Dori Robinson
Darrell Zegers, age 82, has been named Sully’s 4th of July Parade Grand Marshal. Zegers received multiple nominations for the role, one of which read, “I nominate Darrell Zegers, a lifelong resident of Sully and supportive in community activities. Darrell has participated in almost every parade on July 4 for over 50 years.”
Upon receiving word of being chosen, Zegers stated, “This has to be a mistake!” He has since warmed to the idea and is debating what type of candy he will throw to – not at – children in attendance.
Zegers, a 1962 graduate of Lynnville-Sully, and his late wife Linda of 58 years raised four daughters in the community: Deena, Darci, Dori, and Deidra. They were the unsuspecting and sometimes unwilling participants in many a parade over the years. His family has expanded to include five grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Zegers, now retired, worked for Van Wyk Freight Lines for 42 years, rarely missing a day. Past and present past times include gardening, tinkering in his garage, drag racing motorcycles, artful expression with spray paint, and contributing articles to this very paper. He and his wife faithfully attended the First Reformed Church in Sully and created a home filled with fairness, fun, and occasional frenzy.
Congratulations, Grand Marshal Zegers, and thank you for your unique service to our community.
