The heat is on!

The dog days of summer have officially arrived. Iowa was one of several states in the midwest under excessive heat warnings as temperatures rocketed to the triple digits last week. An intense heat wave combined with elevated humidity combined to create what is known as a “heat dome” and therefore, some of the hottest and most miserable conditions of the summer.

The extreme heat was especially hard on employees whose work was outdoors, people with health issues or without air conditioning, and outdoor pets and livestock.

Trent Brisel, employee of Pour Boy Construction, works on Don and Audrey Musgrove’s new home in Northridge Estates as the mercury hovered near the 100-degree mark with a heat index of nearly 115 degrees.

The Jasper County Health Department and IMPACT Community Action Partnership urge residents to beat the heat and stay cool this summer. “Jasper County Health Department is educating that heat-related illnesses and deaths are 100 percent preventable if we remember to stay cool, hydrated, and informed during extreme heat. Call United Way 2-1-1 in order to find a cooling center near you,” said Becky Pryor, administrator for the Jasper County Health Department.
