Taco Tuesday – Serenity Haven launches new fundraiser

When Serenity Haven founders Jamie and Robin Hackert launched a nonprofit earlier this year with the goal to build a group home for special-needs adults in Sully, they knew they would need to expand  fundraising efforts beyond the already established Race for Ace 5k. Funds raised by the third annual Race for Ace this June – over $21,000 – were designated solely for Serenity Haven and served as a phenomenal starting point, but the Hackerts knew more funds would be needed to sustain their dream.

Serenity Haven’s new fundraiser aims to offer convenient, tasty meals on Tuesdays during the harvest season. Robin’s resume includes former owner and operator of the Coffee Cup Cafe, a position she held and loved for 14 years. With a renewed motivation to bring people together for great food and now for a great cause, Robin dived back into her food service roots and is in the busy final stages of launching another fundraiser for Serenity Haven – Taco Tuesdays in October.

“Race for Ace is amazing, but we knew in order to build this house we would have to do others,” said Robin regarding fundraising efforts. “I thought it would great to do something during the busy harvest.”

Robin will be using the famous deep-fried jumbo taco recipe she was graciously given by Dale and Burt Schnell who previously offered the tasty tacos as Lynnville Cafe owners before the tacos made their arrival on the Sully square. Every Tuesday in October, the Hackerts along with a host of dedicated volunteers and supporters will be selling the popular tacos once again to the community.

“I am a foodie! God blessed me with the food love language along with the mentoring of my mama! So why not use the gifts God gave me to see a need and fill a need?” said Robin. “We hope this goes over well – we are very excited and nervous at the same time, because hopefully people understand this is a fundraiser for a home for individuals with special needs. We are not a restaurant.”

Starting Tuesday, Oct. 7, and continuing every Tuesday in October, orders will be taken for the fried jumbo tacos with preorders starting at 3 p.m. Call-in orders will be made by phone – 641-657-7872 – and speaking with a live person. If the line is busy, try again as organizers will not be checking voicemail. From 5-8 p.m. every Tuesday in October, taco orders may be picked up at the Dee Vander Wilt residence located at 707 3rd St. in Sully. Cost per taco is $8, and payment may be made via venmo, cash or check. Like and watch the Serenity Haven Facebook page for details as the date approaches.
