Sports physicals to be offered at Lynnville-Sully

Justine Wyma, Lynnville-Sully School nurse, is organizing an opportunity for students to receive a sports physical at the school on Thursday, Aug. 17, from 12-3 p.m. Wyma is partnering with PRC Health and Fitness, Titan Sports Clinic of Pella, and Sully Medical Clinic to offer the sports physicals, which are required of any student-athlete in grades 7-12 participating in sports, for the reduced cost of $30.

Jill Konfrst, ARNP-C, is a nurse practitioner who will be performing the physicals. Konfrst frequently helps out in area hospital emergency rooms and has office space to see her regular patients at PRC Health and Fitness in Pella. She received her MSN from the University of Nebraska Medical Center and is Board Certified by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners.

Joining Konfrst will be Dr. Tara Finkstein-Roos, a chiropractor who has spent the last 18 years working with high school and college athletes. Together, they provide multiple clinics in the Pella area. Lynnville-Sully will be their first on-site participating school.

Immunizations will be offered at the Sully Medical Clinic from 12-3 p.m. for students who need them with private insurance. There will be paperwork to complete by parents prior to Aug. 17. Contact Wyma for details. Students without insurance or on Title 19 are encouraged to contact the Jasper County Public Health Department for Vaccine for Children (VFC) information. Children eligible for the VFC program are 19 years and younger

and are Medicaid-eligible, uninsured, underinsured, or American Indian or an Alaska native.

Per Iowa law, the start of the 2017-18 school year requires ALL seventh- and 12th-grade students to receive the meningococcal immunization, which prevents meningitis, a bacteria that infects the brain, blood, and spinal cord. This is a new requirement for the 2017-18 school year. According to this new state law, students who have not received the immunization will not meet the mandatory immunization requirement. The Department of Education is firm there will be no grace period to catch up. Seventh-grade students are also required to receive a Tdap booster (tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis/whooping cough), which has been enforced for several years. According to the state expectations, students may not be able to come to school on the first day, Aug. 23, if parents have not provided proof of documentation of the vaccine or an exemption certificate.

The sports physicals will be offered at the reduced rate of $30 each. Half of each physical fee will be donated back to the school. Questions and/or appointments may be communicated by calling the school office or emailing wyma@lshawks.com.
