New beginnings for Lynnville-Sully K-3 students and staff with phase two of construction in the books

A total team effort kicks off the moving process. K-3 students each hauled what they could from their temporary classroom in the middle school wing to their renovated rooms on Friday, Nov. 21.

Christmas came early – and Thanksgiving break, too – for Lynnville-Sully K-3 students and staff with the completion of phase two of the school’s three-phase construction project. The finale of phase two work triggered the start of the moving process to new classrooms on Friday, Nov. 21.

Since the start of the school year, L-S K-3 students have been holding class in the middle school wing of the school while fourth graders reside in temporary classrooms on the west side of the high school, and 5-8 students have been housed throughout the school campus. Friday marked another monumental step in the massive three-phase construction project. K-3 students along with their teachers and supporting staff started moving items from one end of the school to another where new and improved classrooms waited.

“Teachers and students are ready to get things moved so they can get settled into their new space. The kids are really excited to experience their new normal,” said Lynnville-Sully Superintendent Matt Dunsbergen.

The youngest students of the school loaded up their arms with books and classroom supplies and walked in orderly fashion to their new classrooms. The first glimpses of the renovated spaces were accompanied with waves of excitement and happiness as students marveled over the new and improved spaces.

In addition to a complete overhaul of the classrooms, new teacher desks and chairs, built-in storage units and storage cabinets, new sinks, and ADA compliant restrooms are all part of the upgrade.

Students, teachers, and staff started the light work of moving and putting things away on Friday. Over the weekend, a crew of eight L-S administrators, custodians, teachers, and associates worked together to move some of the heavier items. K-3 students had the entire Thanksgiving week off from classes so their teachers could put the finishing touches on the classrooms on Monday and Tuesday, Nov. 24-25. K-3 students and staff will return from Thanksgiving break on Monday, Dec. 1, with an extra share of gratitude and a hint of an early Christmas present as they start classes in their new rooms.

With phase two nearly in the books, preparation for phase three is underway. The parking lot south of the kindergarten doors has been cleaned of construction equipment and fencing, but is still off limits until Dec. 1. Temporary fencing started going up on the north end of the middle school building on Monday, Nov. 24, to protect students during recess and house dumpsters, construction equipment, and materials. Phase three of construction will focus on revamping the 4-8 wing and will include all new flooring, ceilings, lighting, an additional conference room, a new special education room, and all new furniture. Students in grades 4-8 will remain in their temporary classrooms through the end of the school year. Currently, the anticipated completion date for phase three of construction is May 7.
