L-S School District residents to vote on $4.5 million bond issue Mar. 3

Tuesday, Mar. 3, residents in the Lynnville-Sully Community School District will have the opportunity to vote on a $4.5 million school bond issue. Polling locations have been set with those living in Mahaska and Jasper Counties voting at Sully Community Center and those residents in Poweshiek County voting at the Searsboro Community Center. Both locations will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. A super-majority vote of 60 percent plus one is needed to approve the bond issue.

Who can vote?

Registered voters who live in the L-S District who rent or own their residence may vote. Landowners who own land in the L-S District, but do not live in the district, may NOT vote. L-S families who open enroll into the district may NOT vote either. Voters will need to show proof of residency with a driver’s license. If your current L-S District address is incorrect on your license, a utility bill with your current address will suffice.

What is included in the $4.5 million school bond?

Highlights of the bond consist of improvements to school safety including K-8 and 9-12 main entrance security upgrades and hardware and door replacements throughout the school. Maintenance of the 1959 and 1981 school buildings including electrical panels, and HVAC system and geothermal upgrades are a large part of the proposed bond. ADA compliance items including sidewalks connecting exterior doors to paved surfaces and new restrooms and football/track concession stand are also included. For continued educational excellence, a new multi-purpose room is included in the bond issue for additional physical education space and extra-curricular activities.

How will this affect my property taxes?

Passage of the $4.5 million bond will increase the existing debt levy rate from $1.06 to $1.46. Remember, property taxes are calculated on assessed value of your property. A homeowner with a $100,000 assessed home value in the district would see an approximate increase of $20.09 per year. Lynnville-Sully continues to have one of the lowest property tax rates in the SICL Conference and surrounding towns.
