My name is Jessica Holterhaus and I am the summer intern this year at the Hometown Press. I am a recent graduate of Pella Community High School. My parents are John and Angie Holterhaus, and I have two siblings – Donovan, who is a high school sophomore, and Emily, who is an eighth grader. I have always enjoyed my English classes, and for the past three years of high school, I have been a staff member of our school’s yearbook, including two years being a staff editor. I am planning to attend Northwest Missouri State University in the fall, with a major in journalism.
To go along with my appreciation for writing and design, I have been involved in volleyball, basketball, and track over the past four years. While writing this, just days after completing my final sports season at the state track meet, it is safe to say I have had a blast participating in these three sports. I was also involved in National Honor Society and have been since my sophomore year – keeping up with my school work is important to me. In addition, I have enjoyed attending our youth group at Third Reformed Church in Pella, and I am planning to travel on a mission trip to Mexico during the third week in June.
I was very excited when I saw the ad for this internship at the Hometown Press because its description stated exactly what my college and future interests are. This summer, I will have the opportunity to cover Lynnville-Sully baseball and softball games, as well as working in the Hometown Press office or writing other various stories. I have a friendly, optimistic personality, and I am eager to learn and meet new people. I hope that through this internship, I can expand my skills as a writer and successfully tell the stories of this community.
