Economics study spurs winning poster

A poster contest held by Dordt College coincided perfectly with Lisa Martin’s second-grade unit on economics. Martin’s second graders studied many aspects of economics and then created posters for Dordt College’s Economics Everywhere Poster Contest through the Center for Economic Education.

The contest was open to students in grades first through sixth grade and was designed to stimulate interest in the fundamentals of the economics system. The contest required students to represent one of six basic economic concepts in a color drawing. Martin’s students submitted entries depicting the concepts of Goods and Services, Opportunity Cost, and Producers and Consumers. The entries were judged based on accuracy of concept, representation, and originality.

Twelve overall winners were selected, and Martin is thrilled to announce Matthew Mintle is one of them. His poster, titled Producers and Consumers, will be featured on the June calendar page of the printed poster calendar. In addition to a free calendar featuring his understanding of the economics concept, Mintle received a certificate and beach ball. Martin and L-S also received recognition.

Twelve honorable mention honors were also awarded, and Martin notes another of her students, Laura Fikse, received honorable mention for her poster depicting Goods and Services.

“Congratulations to these two students and to all of my students for doing such a fantastic job learning about economics,” said Martin.
