Dreams of a white Easter granted

It’s an unusual sight in mid-April – green grass emerging as snow flurries fall. A wintry mix on Easter Sunday, Apr. 17, left many people feeling and thinking the season was more like winter than spring. Above, cousins Brooke Conover and Kate and Tyler Arkema are all bundled up in winter gear as they head out to the barn on Sunday afternoon to check on their cattle on the Arkema’s acreage just north of Sully.

It’s safe to say many people weren’t dreaming of a white Easter, but that is exactly what Mother Nature delivered on Sunday, Apr. 17. Weather conditions over the course of Holy Week certainly didn’t indicate spring, but that didn’t stop area residents from acknowledging, honoring, and celebrating the Easter holiday.

Area churches held a variety of services, including Maundy Thursday, sunrise services, and special worship on Easter Sunday during normal service times.

Children gathered at Old Settlers Park in Lynnville on Saturday, Apr. 16, for the annual community Easter egg hunt hosted by Lynnville Heart of Worship. The cooler temperatures and gusty winds didn’t keep people away as hundreds of children scooped up 15,000 eggs in record speed at the annual event.

The weather on Easter Sunday was anything but spring-like. The day dawned cool but with some sunshine. Clouds built up throughout the day, leading to a wintry mix that fell in the afternoon and evening hours. The unseasonable snowfall and cool temperatures that dipped well below average made the Easter holiday weekend feel more like Christmas. Des Moines reported 1.4” of snow on the ground on Easter Sunday.

Fortunately for residents hoping for spring to return, warmer weather was forecasted for late in the week. Temperatures are expected to reach the 70s at the end of the week. A chance for scattered storms – not snow – are possible on Friday and Saturday.
