Donkey basketball game in Sully Monday benefits playground

The Sully Night Out Committee has organized a donkey basketball game for Monday, Apr. 13, at 6:30 p.m. at the Lynnville-Sully High School gym as a fundraiser for the central park and playground improvement project. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. with concession stand operated by the Lynnville-Sully baseball team open at 5:45 p.m. so you can eat your evening meal before the donkey games begin. The menu includes walking tacos, super nachos, pulled pork, hotdogs, popcorn, pop, Gatorade, water, and candy.

Mark Doll and Dwight Beyer will be the announcers. Teryl Ver Ploeg and Melissa Doll will operate the scoreboard.

Free donkey rides will be given to children at intermission. Children must have a coupon for a free ride available at the door and must be age 12 or younger and accompanied by a paying adult, limited to the first 125 children in line for a ride.

For those unfamiliar with this fun event, teams of local residents play basketball while riding, or trying to ride, a donkey. Of course, there are always some stubborn mules (possibly trained that way?) that make scoring or even getting close to the hoop a hilarious challenge. Four teams have signed up. The first game will be 1st State Bank versus Janco, and the second game will feature the Lynnville-Sully faculty versus Co-Line, followed by the winners in the championship game with a trophy donated by The Trophy Shop, Sully.

Team members are as follows.

1st State Bank: Keith Renaud, Kyle Terpstra, Kurt Harthoorn, Brad Van Vark, Steve Russell, Lejon Ladwig, Drew Van Rees, Kyle Van Rees, Tara Conover, Stacey Alberts, and Nick Beyer coached by James Walkup.

Janco: Joe Dirksen, Troy Hartz, Tyler Jansen, Ryan McFarland, Dylan Nelson, Brady Sage, Garrett Van Maanen, and Scott Van Zee coached by Dana McFarland.

Lynnville-Sully faculty: Brian Lowry, Joel Vos, Darin Arkema, Nick De Penning, Kevin Johnson, Nick Harthoorn, Joel Harthoorn, and Matt Rasmusson coached by Jerry Hulsing and Jeff Corbett.

Co-Line: Ryan Johnson, Cory Tice, Chris Tice, Jeff Kling, Brady Van Wyk, Tony Van Wyk, Shane Jansen, Steve Davis, Jason Allbee, Jay Mitchell, Ashley Lemons, Rachel Zuidema, and Tayler Vander Molen coached by Dale (Rail) Brand and Eric Brand.

Monday, Apr. 13, at 1 p.m. is the deadline for purchasing advance discounted tickets at $6 each (for all ages, preschool free) at both banks in Sully, the bank in Lynnville, and the Hometown Press in Sully. Tickets at the door will be $8 each.
