Clean sweep of Coach of the Year awards for Lynnville-Sully’s Scott Alberts

Lynnville-Sully High School’s head baseball coach Scott Alberts accepts one of two Coach of the Year awards he received at the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association Banquet held Saturday, Jan. 18, in West Des Moines.

Lynnville-Sully High School’s head baseball coach Scott Alberts added another title to his already impressive resume – Coach of the Year. Alberts, who has been at the helm of Lynnville-Sully’s baseball program for the last seven seasons, was the recipient of not one but two Coach of the Year honors at the 2025 Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association’s Awards Banquet held Saturday, Jan. 18, at the Sheraton Hotel in West Des Moines.

For the second consecutive year, the IHSBCA honored Alberts with the Class 1A Southeast District Coach of the Year award on Saturday. His time in the spotlight continued as he also earned the top Class 1A title by being named the State Coach of the Year. Both honors are voted on by coaches within the IHSBCA. Alberts has made a clean sweep of Coach of the Year hardware when you add in the SICL Coach of the Year award Alberts received shortly after the 2024 season ended.

The awards are well deserved and commemorate the record-breaking and memorable season Alberts, his staff, and the Hawks put together in 2024. Coach Alberts was at the helm as the Lynnville-Sully Hawks won their third consecutive SICL and District titles, made a second consecutive State appearance, and on July 26, 2024, the Hawks won the Class 1A State Championship. L-S finished the season with a 29-3 record, and the Hawks went undefeated in the SICL and on their home field in 2024.

Prior to the IHSBCA evening banquet, Alberts joined a panel with the three state champion coaches as part of Saturday’s line-up of clinic speakers. The state championship coaches were asked to present on their programs and share what helped set them apart from the competition. Alberts first recognized his coaching staff, which included his wife, Stacey, and L-S baseball alum Conner Maston.

Scott and Stacey have coached together for over 20 years, and together, they led the L-S softball program to new heights. Stacey was the head softball coach at L-S for 16 years, with Scott serving as assistant for the bulk of that time. Stacey boasts quite the resume herself with over 350 wins, 10 SICL championships, and seven trips to State highlighting her head coaching career. Scott stepped away from softball after assisting Stacey to become the head baseball coach in 2018. Two seasons ago, Stacey stepped away from the softball program and rejoined Scott as a baseball volunteer assistant coach. The powerhouse coaches did not miss a beat and continued to build up the baseball program. Stacey’s multi-faceted role involves in-depth behind-the-scenes work. One element of the Hawks’ game she dramatically improved is the hitters’ offensive power. Prior to Stacey joining the baseball team, the Hawks held a team batting average of .281. Since her arrival, the team average has been above .350.

Another element of the 2024 team was the return of Maston to the line up, this time as a volunteer coach. Coach Alberts and Maston have a successful history together that dates back to Maston’s youth playing days. Coach Alberts pulled Maston to the varsity squad as an eighth grader, and he served as a vital role building the program to where it is today. Maston continues his baseball career at the collegiate level for Morningside University. After Maston’s freshman season, Alberts welcomed him back as a volunteer assistant coach for the summer to focus on pitcher development, among other aspects. In 2024, the Hawk pitching staff held opponents to a .131 batting average and had a collective 1.70 ERA. With both Stacey and Maston assisting Scott, the Hawks’ champion-level success was bolstered by an equally champion-caliber coaching staff.

Additional gems Alberts emphasized as keys to success include year-round development, multi-sport athletes, parent volunteers who step up when asked, a positive pitching mentality, the importance of role players, and overcoming the fear of failure.

It’s hard to imagine baseball season is around the corner when recent sub-zero temperatures have dominated the headlines. The extreme cold has not sidelined Alberts and his squad though as they started indoor off-season work months ago. The reigning Coach of the Year continues to put in the time and effort required for another champion-caliber season.

Congratulations, coach Alberts!
