Depending on where you live, different lists of judges are on the ballot for a yes or no vote for retaining the judges in office as well as some township offices.

On the federal portion of the ballot are candidates for president and vice president: Donald J. Trump/JD Vance (REP) and Kamala D. Harris/Tim Walz (DEM) as well as five other pairs from various other parties; and for U.S. Representative District 1 Mariannette Miller-Meeks (REP) and Christina Bohannan (DEM).

Barb Kniff McCulla (REP) is unopposed for State Representative District 37 while in District 38 incumbent Jon Dunwell (REP) and Brad Magg (DEM) are on the ballot.

Jasper County offices are Brad Shutts unopposed for county sheriff, Jenna Jennings unopposed for county auditor, Doug Cupplies and Jerry Chandler for a board of supervisors post, and Thad Nearmyer and Randy Ray seeking the board of supervisors vacancy.

Two amendments to the Iowa Constitution are also on the ballot concerning voting and gubernatorial succession. A simply majority of 50% plus one vote is needed to adopt the proposed amendments.

Amendment 1 would change the wording to state that “only U.S. citizens” can vote while the current language states “every” citizen. It also allows 17-year-olds who will be 18 by the General Election to vote in Primary Elections and it would codify Iowa’s voting age as 18, not 21 even though 18-year-olds have had the right to vote in Iowa for decades, the Constitution still says citizens age 21 or older under a 1970 amendment.

Amendment 2 provides clear guidelines if the governor dies, resigns, or is removed from office, the lieutenant governor would assume the office of governor for the remainder of the term, thereby creating a vacancy in the office of lieutenant governor.

In Jasper County, voters will be asked for approval of issuing bonds not exceeding $6.4 million for a secondary roads maintenance building. The measure passes by a “yes” vote from 60% of votes cast.
