Carlson wins LSCEF Half-Minute Challenge

Trace Carlson, son of Adam and Paige Carlson of Lynnville and a freshman at Lynnville-Sully High School, has $500 more to his name, as does the Lynnville-Sully Community Education Foundation, after he made a lay-up, free throw, three pointer, and a half-court shot in just 30 seconds during the LSCEF’s Hawk Half-Minute Challenge on Monday, Jan. 22.

Carlson won the challenge in front of a packed gym of fans during halftime of the boys basketball game against Montezuma. He had no trouble making the lay-up but then struggled to sink the free throw. He cashed in the free throw on his fifth attempt, drained a trey after just two tries, then sprinted to half court with seconds to spare. Carlson launched a shot from the half-court line that hit nothing but the bottom of the net. Lynnville Repair, Inc., owned by Matt and Heather Zylstra, was the business sponsor for Monday night’s challenge. They awarded $500 to Carlson and gave a matching $500 donation to the LSCEF.

Carlson is the LSCEF’s first winner this season. For the past several years, the LSCEF has partnered with generous community members and businesses for the fun and competitive challenge. Each basketball season during designated home games, the LSCEF encourages fans to enter the challenge for a chance to win $500. Three names are chosen at random to compete during halftime of the boys’ game. To win the $500, the participant must make all four shots in 30 seconds or less. Collum Electric served as the business sponsor on Saturday, Jan. 20, where all three contestants got multiple tries at the half-court shot but could not complete the feat.

The LSCEF’s final half-minute challenge was held on Tuesday, Jan. 22, when the Hawks took on Colfax-Mingo. Nikkel Construction was the business sponsor.
