Business opportunity ‘Blossoms’ for newly retired Sully resident

By Derek Bates

Laureen Van Wyk of rural Sully ended a chapter in her life’s book in December as she retired from a career at Grinnell College. Letting no time go to waste, she has begun a new chapter by starting Blossoms, a silk flower arrangement business she runs out of her home a mile east of Sully.

“I have always loved flowers. They just make me happy!” said Van Wyk. “Flowers can have a positive impact and bring so much joy to others,” something Van Wyk would love to share with others in the area.

Van Wyk had the privilege of arranging a few displays for local funerals last fall, and the idea for Blossoms was born. She creates arrangements for funerals and other special occasions. As a service to her older customers, Van Wyk will deliver the arrangement so the customer can see it, sign the card, and then, she will deliver it to the church. Blossoms also offers free delivery in the Lynnville-Sully area for other occasions.

She is currently working on Valentine’s Day and spring arrangements.

“I’m super excited for an event coming up in March. A few of us are teaming up and planning a fun women’s night at La Rose Marie Bakery and Boutique. Everyone will have to stay tuned for the details!” said Van Wyk.

“Flowers can have a positive impact and bring so much joy to others,” she added. Studies show that designing floral arrangements can be therapeutic – similar to meditation. It’s just so relaxing and fun!”

Van Wyk is starting her retirement by creating and spreading happiness through Blossoms, but it’s just one of many things in her life that bring her joy. She enjoys playing piano, reading, and her grandchildren - including babysitting her grandson Blake two days a week. She and her husband Marlin have three grown children: Lance, his wife Amanda, and their daughter Jordyn, who live in Urbandale; Cody, who also lives in Urbandale; and Kate, her husband Nick Beyer, and their son Blake, who live just south of Searsboro.
