Top 10 finish for Lynnville-Sully middle schoolers at Science Bowl

A group of five Lynnville-Sully Middle School students teamed up to compete against Iowa’s brightest middle schoolers in the Middle School Science Bowl hosted by Ames Laboratory/Iowa State University on Saturday, Feb. 20, in Ames.

Maren Egging, Joshua Morningstar, Jacob Morningstar, Emily Rozendaal, and Bret Stravers learned of their entrance into the bowl only days before the competition, leaving little time to prepare. However, the students rose to the challenge and confidently held their own in the fast-paced, question-and-answer contest that tested their knowledge of life science, physical science, earth and space science, energy, mathematics, and general science.

Twenty-four teams started the round-robin tournament, and Lynnville-Sully found themselves in a three-way tie at the end of the first round. The team representing L-S won the tiebreaker to advance out of their pool by correctly answering the most questions in the shortest amount of time. Overall, L-S finished in the top 10 – a remarkable feat given the short amount of preparation time.

“I am very impressed with our team's finish considering they had no time to prepare,” said Colleen Taylor, talented and gifted/reading teacher. “I think this speaks volumes for these students and the education we are providing at Lynnville-Sully.”
