Terry and Linda Lowry and their two sons and their families of Searsboro were presented the 2024 Farm Family of the Year Award during the Grinnell Lions Club’s Ag Appreciation Day on Thursday, Aug. 29, in Grinnell. The plaque reads: “The 2024 Jim Urfer Spirit of Farming Award presented to Terry and Linda Lowry and Family for their dedication to ag business and community involvement presented by Grinnell Lions Club.”
“In recognition of Jim Urfer’s lifetime involvement in Grinnell agribusiness and his support for Ag Appreciation Day, the Grinnell Lions Club will recognize Terry and Linda Lowry of rural Searsboro with the 2024 Farm Family of the Year Award,” said Tim Dill, who presented the plaque.
Dill also noted that 50 years ago this past June, Terry and Linda met at Jewel Bank located a short distance from the stage in Central Park where the Ag Day program and awards presentations took place.
In announcing the award, Dill said, “Terry and Linda have a lifetime of experience raising row crops, cow-calf herd, farrow to finish hogs, hay, and kids – their two sons and spouses (Jason/Jennifer and Brian/Carrie) and their nine grandkids are also active on the family farm.” Brian’s family was unable to attend the presentation.
Dill continued, “Over the years, Terry has appreciated his brother’s (Gary Lowry) help, good landlords, and helpful neighbors. The sense of community out in the country is what makes farming so rewarding. Terry has been active in Farm Bureau, Searsboro Manor, Lynnville-Sully School Committees, Grinnell Christian Church, Poweshiek Pork Producers, and the local Cattlemen’s Association. Terry is an Iowa State University graduate with a degree in ag education and was a vocational ag teacher and FFA advisor at Lynnville-Sully until farming full-time. Behind every farmer is a very supportive wife. Linda has raised produce to feed their growing family and hosted many meetings with Terry. She also actively volunteers at their church and for Birthright.”
