Harley Blaine Van Weelden, a quiet man, was a man of very few words. He was the first of six children born to Dick and Anna (Van Wyk) Van Weelden. Harley was born south of Pella on Apr. 1, 1939. He graduated from Sully Christian School and then began working on the family farm north of Sully.
Nov. 27, 1962, he and Norma Jean Vander Streek were united in marriage, and they raised two sons: Robert John and Michael Jay. Harley continued farming and milking, which he thoroughly enjoyed. The remainder of his working lifetime, he worked for Midland Manufacturing in Monroe until he retired. Harley and Norma were faithful in following and supporting their sons with sporting activities. He was an Iowa Hawkeyes fan, and they enjoyed camping at Lake Red Rock. In his later years, Harley experienced some memory issues and with the assistance of his wife, Norma, and their son, Michael, was able to remain at home.
Harley is survived by his wife Norma and their son Michael Van Weelden of Pella. Nov. 5, 2017, his son Robert passed away at the age of 53 years and left Harley with two grandchildren, Mariah Dale Buckley Van Weelden and Taylor Ray Van Weelden. Of his siblings, Harley leaves his three brothers and two sisters and their spouses: Ronald (Marilyn) Van Weelden of Newton, Verna (Arthur) Zylstra of Pella, Dwight (Jerilyn) Van Weelden of Lynnville, Marcia Steenhoek of El Cajon, CA, and Curtis (Amy) Van Weelden of Waukesha, WI; and a sister-in-law Beulah (Vander Streek) Blom of Pella; along with several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents and son, Harley was preceded in death by his sister-in-law and brother-in-law Sandra (Ronald) Van Weelden and Paul Steenhoek; his parents-in-law John and Dirkie (Van Zee) Vander Streek; a sister-in-law and brothers-in-law: Freda (Vander Streek) and Harold Spoelstra, and Carroll (Chuck) Blom.
Harley grew up in the Sully Christian Reformed Church and was presently a member of Calvary Christian Reformed Church in Pella.
