Shelby Agan, 38

Shelby Eugene Agan of Sully was born June 13, 1980, to Earl and Paula (Steinbach) Agan in Des Moines. He passed away Apr. 17, 2019, at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Apr. 23, at Sully Community Church. Memorial donations may be made to Agan Boys’ Education Fund at the 1st State Bank in Sully.

Shelby grew up in Des Moines and was a 1998 graduate of Lincoln High School. After high school, he attended  OPCMIA Apprenticeship School. Most recently, he worked for Casey’s General Store as a gas hauler.

Apr. 9, 2005, Shelby was united in marriage to Alison Vander Wilt in Sully. To this union they were blessed with three sons: Kyler, Boston, and Merrick.

Shelby was very close to his family, especially his boys. They were his best friends. He loved Jeeping and fishing with them and making them laugh. He never met a stranger and was always willing to lend a hand. He called several of his family members and friends every day just to chat. He was quite the story-teller, always reminiscing about the past. While sometimes inappropriate and poorly timed, his jokes were the best. You could always count on him for a good laugh. Shelby even played tricks on his nurses at the hospital. Riding and working on his Jeep were his favorite pastimes. He was a fan of the Packers, Red Sox, and Iowa Hawkeyes. Shelby was a man of quiet faith and attended Sully Community Church. He loved giving gifts but could never keep a secret.

Shelby was preceded in death by his grandparents: Earl Sr. and Myrna Agan and Mary Steinbach; and his great-grandmother Leah Newbury.

Those left to cherish his memory are: His wife Alison Agan; their sons, Kyler, Boston, and Merrick; his parents; his grandpa, Robert Steinbach; his brother, Shane (Heather) Agan, Jude, and Lennon; his sister, Shauna (Jeremy) Barnaskas and Leah; his parents-in-law, Gary and Dee Vander Wilt; his sisters-in-law, Shawna and Ed Goemaat, Megan (Adam) Pothoven, Andrew, Kathryn, and Matthew, Robin and Darin Morvant, Travis (Tayler) Morvant and their children Dawson and Quorra, Bayley, and Maximus; his brother-in-law, Trevor (Janae) Vander Wilt, Tyke, Sadie, Gunnar, Deacon, Charity, and Betsy.
