Margaret De Jong, 100

Margaret De Jong, 100, of Sully, passed away Friday, Oct. 25, 2019, at Hospice of Pella Comfort House. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Oct. 29, at Van Dyke Duven Funeral Home in Pella with Pastor Wayne Sneller of Sully First Reformed Church presiding. A private burial at Sully Cemetery followed the funeral. Memorial contributions are suggested for the Hospice of Pella Comfort House.

Margaret Pearl Monsma, the youngest child of Ben and Laura (Renaud) Monsma, was born June 21, 1919, in rural Sully. She graduated from Sully High School in 1937 and during high school, played the violin and piano. Sept. 14, 1939, she was united in marriage with Arthur Garret De Jong at Sully First Reformed Church where she was and remained a lifelong member. Following their marriage, Arthur began farming the farm of his parents, Dirk and Johanna (Kruseman) De Jong, and Margaret was very active in all of the farming operations. They continued to farm the same farm, a Century Farm, for 69 years until they retired in 1997. Margaret enjoyed cooking and canning the produce and had been a 4-H leader.

Those left to honor her memory are four children: Clarence Lee De Jong of Sully; Beverly Lou (Larry) Stravers of Prairie City, Betty Sue (Roger) Vander Velden of Reasnor, Darlene Ann Hyslope of West Des Moines; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur De Jong, in 2007; her parents; three sisters and their husbands: Doris (Walter) De Jong, Rachael (Ervie) Mick, Freda (Oz) Neilson; her brother, Glen (Wilhelmina) Monsma; her parents-in-law, Dirk and Johanna De Jong; and her brother-in-law, Walter De Jong and his wife, Doris (Monsma).
