Stella Marie Turnbull was born Mar. 28, 2007, to Travis and Sarah (Fosdick) Turnbull, in Pella. Stella grew up in Pella and was a recent graduate of Pella High School.
On June 19, 2025, she ran into the arms of Jesus with her mom and dad by her side, just as they always were. Funeral services were at 1 p.m., Monday, June 23, at Federated Church, Pella, with those attending requested to wear bright, colorful clothing. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the family for a memorial to be established.
Diagnosed at a month of age with Spinal Muscular Atrophy and a rare vascular anomaly with a prognosis of “weeks or months,” Stella continued to exceed all expectations. Born with a spirit as bright as her eyes, Stella defied the odds and inspired everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.
Despite the challenges she faced, Stella lived life with unmatched determination and joy. She was always excited for family vacations to the beach where she could listen to the waves and hang out with her family. She cheered on her brothers at their football games and enjoyed watching her favorite movies, swinging outside while jamming to Taylor Swift, and reading or crafting with her nurses. She was often found cuddling with Mom and convincing Dad to adapt her surroundings to make the impossible possible. She had an incredible experience as a Kid Captain for the Iowa Hawkeyes football team and even had a children’s book written about her. Her claim to fame is meeting Taylor Swift!
Stella’s life was a testament to strength, grace, and the power of community. Her resilience touched friends, family, and complete strangers around the world. She leaves behind a legacy of hope and a reminder that even in the face of adversity, joy can flourish.
She will be deeply missed and forever remembered by her family, friends, nurses, medical providers, and all who were touched by her light.
Those left to cherish Stella’s memory are her parents Travis and Sarah, her brothers Treyton and Sayer, grandparents Jerry Fosdick, Maureen (and the late Tom) Hutchcroft, Lila Turnbull, and Glenn (Ginger) Turnbull; Sarah’s siblings Faye Damanti, Rachel (Nick) Basala, and Michael (Kendra) Fosdick; Travis’s brothers Hanson (Jess) Turnbull and Seamus Turnbull; and many cousins.
She will also be lovingly remembered by her home health nurses who are like family.
