Glenn Edwin Vanderpol was born May 21, 1939, near Killduff. He was oldest of three children born to John Arthur and Wilma (Van Wyk) Vanderpol. Glenn suffered from Stills Disease as a teenager, and out of faith, his parents moved the entire family to California. They spent two and a half years in Redlands, CA, and his disease got much better. Glenn came back to Sully in the spring of his junior year. Glenn graduated from Lynnville-Sully High School in Sully with the Class of 1957. He then attended Central College in Pella for two years.
Glenn was introduced to Thelma Louise Jansen, a daughter of Henry G. and Cora (Harthoorn) Jansen, and they dated for two years. Aug. 31, 1961, Glenn and Thelma were united in marriage at Sully Christian Reformed Church. Glenn and Thelma lived northwest of Sully for 15 years and moved to the homeplace south of Sully in 1976 where Glenn remained until 2018. It was during this time that Glenn lost the love of his life to carcinoma on May 11, 2017. Glenn moved into Sully before becoming a resident at Newton Village in June of 2024. Glenn and Thelma retired from farming in 1998. Glenn loved all things farming, especially his love for Minneapolis Moline.
Those who will cherish his memory are his three children Michael Wayne Vanderpol of Sully, Carrie Beth (Randy) Vander Weerdt of Searsboro, and Matthew Allen (Trisha) Vanderpol of Clive; five grandchildren, four step grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren. Glenn also leaves his two sisters and their husbands Verna (Kenneth) Hackert and Wanda (Melvin) Lanser all of Lynnville; and Thelma’s siblings Donald (Karen) Jansen of Grinnell and Jan (Ryk) De Goey of Sully; along with several nieces and nephews.
Glenn was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, twin granddaughters Madison and Mariah Vanderpol who died infancy, his parents-in-law, and Thelma’s two siblings, brother Gene Jansen who was killed in 1971 and sister Marjorie Jansen.
Glenn will be remembered as a friend to many and enjoyed talking to people, especially sharing his faith to those he met. He will be missed by many.
