L-S volleyball crushes Keota on pink-out senior night

The L-S varsity volleyball team faced the Keota Eagles at home for their last game of the regular season on Monday, Oct. 10. They won the conference match easily in three games: 25-11, 25-11, and 25-15.

The evening was designated as senior night/pink out night. The cross-country and the volleyball seniors were all introduced and recognized before the varsity volleyball game, and all levels of volleyball players wore pink for breast cancer awareness.

“Tonight was a great night for the Hawks!” said head coach Jayme Deal. “Not only did we beat Keota in three games and the seniors got to all play together while Makenzy Rozendaal coached, but we also raised money from our breast cancer awareness bake sale.”

Seniors on the team this year are Jelissa Rozendaal, Olivia Ritter, Makenzy Rozendaal, Brenna Lanser, and Allison Renaud.

“I’m really sad to see our seniors go this year, but I’m glad that they got to have their last regular season game at home and with a lot of support for the pink-out game,” said junior Camryn Russell.

The Hawks served 97 serves and had 14 aces. Sophomore Carson Fisk had six aces, Lanser had three, and Renaud and Olivia Ritter each had two. The team had trouble with 10 serving errors, but they still found a way to get the win.

Lanser received nine serves successfully. J. Rozendaal received seven, and Russell had five.

The girls had 119 attacks and only eight attacking errors. Lanser led the team with kills with 13, and Russell and junior Jataya Meyer tied with four.

The team was 77 percent for digs on the night. Ritter and Fisk both had 11 digs, J. Rozendaal had 10, and Lanser had nine.

The volleyball team decided to do a free-will donation bake sale with the pink-out night. The sale raised $366 dollars for a family in need around the community.

The Hawks will travel to Sigourney on Thursday, Oct. 13, to play in a quad tournament to determine fifth through eighth places in the conference.

JV Results

Prior to the varsity match, the Hawk JV teams finished up their season by taking on Keota.

“Overall, we ended on a good note,” said L-S Coach Kyra Smith. “Our JVB girls had a great first game; however, we let the excitement of the night get in the way of finishing the second game like we could have, and we let that one slip away.”

L-S won the first set 21-14 and then re-versed roles, falling by that same score in the second set. Sophomore Courtney Gan-naway led the team in kills with three, and classmate Andrea Bogaard added two. Sophomore Isabell Smith was the leading server, making all 13.

Next, the JVB team took to the court and had a great night with some long volleys. They finished with a 2-0 night: 25-14 and 25-14.

“They set the ball up well and were able to get some impressive kills,” L-S Coach Smith noted. “I continue to be pleased with how well we serve; even though tonight wasn't our best serving night, we still had some great runs with aces.”

Freshman Janelle Rozendaal led at the service line, making all 19 with six aces. I. Smith also had a good night serving, making nine of 10 with five aces. Junior Taylor Maasdam made her mark at the net, blocking five and getting five kills.

Looking back on the season, L-S Coach Smith said, “I really enjoyed the JV girls this season and am already anticipating next year. I couldn't be happier with our overall attitude and effort given the entire season.”
